About Northwood Green

map

The village is on the verge of the Forest of Dean about ten miles Southwest of Gloucester about two miles North of the A48 and two miles South of the A40.
It lies along a crest with views across the Severn to the Cotswold escarpment to the South and May Hill to the North.

Originally a settlement of farming and agricultural workers and also for the workers at the Albion Coach and Wagon works at the junction of the Gloucester - Chepstow line and the now defunct line to Hereford.  The old coach works is now a wood treatment plant.  Some of the villagers are still associated with agricultural and rural activities whilst others work in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol or South Wales.

The village lies within the Parish of Westbury on Severn which is now combined with Blaisdon, Flaxley and Minsterworth.  An exhaustive history of the combined parishes exists in the British History on line pages here.

The Westbury BT exchange is a sub exchange of Gloucester and so the dial code for Northwood Green is 01452, whilst the first 3 digits of the subsequent number are 760.
